Resum

The European family is characterized by having had a deep transformation in the recent decades.
It has changed from a patriarchal model - in which the father was responsible for the key
decisions of the family - to a post-patriarchal one, where the couple shares all decisions and
responsibilities equally. There have been many changes that have generated this new situation:
change of roles, increase of life expectancy, reduced reproductive burden, declining birth rate,
rupture of inbreeding, social consolidation of divorce, etc. However, the primary function of the
family remains intact; to promote the integral growth of its members. Thus, the family remains
the group where you are born and where the basic needs of the children are assumed. The family
is a groupin which members cohere, love each other and are bond to each other for helping them
grow and live as people in all the dimensions: cognitive, affective, relational, etc. In the second
part of the article, we present the case of a family in which its pathological functioning impedes
them to accomplish the expected emotional functions that are structured in a chaotic and
disorganized way
