Resum
Societal organizations are not-for-profit and contribute to our well-being and health by creating something of social value. These organizations respond to social dynamics and are constantly changing. Leading societal organizations is not easy because these organizations function in a multiple and complex context. This multiple and complex context places high demands on leaders. The meaning and values in the organization give direction and guidance to the actions of the leaders and employees. Meaning and value articulation are therefore important qualities of leaders in societal organizations. In this they differ from leaders in corporate organizations where profitability and shareholder value are still paramount. When it comes to meaning making and value articulation, leaders in corporate organizations can learn from their peers in societal organizations. This could perhaps contribute to the meaning and value proposition of business organizations taking on more substance than is often the case today.
