This descriptive article aims to call attention to the real phenomenon of workplace violence. Workplace violence as a concept has been the object of study for only a few years, but it affects all professions and profes-sional categories. The article is structured in five sections. The first defines the object of study; the second features data on the dimensions of the phenomenon; the third is a classification; the fourth details the theories that offer explanations as to why it occurs; the final one discusses risk factors.
