The GQBB (Grup de Química BIològica i Biotecnología) is a multidisciplinary group focused in Glycosciences that undertakes translational research projects from a molecular approach to applications in the fields of industrial biotechnology (biocatalysis, synthetic biology and bioprocesses) and biomedicine (therapeutic targets, drug discovery and animal models). Main areas include: a) structure/function and engineering of carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZymes) as therapeutic targets and as biocatalysts, b) bioinformatics on CAZYmes and computer-assisted tools in protein engineering, c) metabolic engineering of bacteria and yeast for the production of glycolipids, c) synthetic biology of photosynthetic microalgae for glycolipids production, d) bioprocess optimization and upscaling in pilot plant; e) molecular aspects of neurodegenerative diseases associated with glycan or protein amyloid diposits: transthyretin-associated amyloidosis and Lafora disease.
