Abstract
By plasma polymerizing appropriate monomers onto the surface of accelerator particles, here CBS, the onset of its accelerating effect during the vulcanization of rubber compounds can be controlled. Using squalene as a model substance for rubber, the influence of CBS, modified by the application of three different monomers, upon scorch time and crosslink density was studied. Rheometer testing of NR compounds showed that, although scorch times were clearly influenced by the plasma polymerized monomers on the CBS surface, final crosslink densities of the cured rubbers were almost identical.
