Abstract

We compare two periods, of one year each, of functioning of the unit of preparation of IV mixtures. During the first period all IV mixtures prescribed by the service of internal medicine were prepared. During the second period a protocol of standardization of these mixtures was developed together with the service of internal medicine and with the nurses having in mind the statistical data of the previous year. Only the mixtures included in the protocol were prepared in the service of pharmacy. The mixtures which were not included, whenever prescribed, were prepared at the unit of nursing. With this standardization we have been able to achieve a dramatic reduction (87.2% in mixtures with a great volume and 57% in mixtures with a small volume) in the number of different types of mixtures prepared. The number of returns and of discarded mixtures has also decreased significantly. The mixtures prepared at the units of nursing have represented only 0.46% of the total number of mixtures prepared, while the number of total mixtures prepared at the service of pharmacy has increased by 23% with respect to the previous year. This confirms the good acceptance ot standardization by the involved services.
