Abstract

The presence of religious symbolism in public space is a controversial topic in Spain. Every year for Christmas it is verified that the installation of Christmas cribs in public squares generates discussions. We propose an ethnographic analysis of the reactions generated by the Christmas crib of the Plaça de Sant Jaume in Barcelona in 2004, as the origin of a controversy that is updated every year. Indirect observation analyzing texts published in the press and in-depth interviews are the sources of information used. The study allows us to appreciate the dynamic established between hegemonic culture and popular culture
