Abstract

The Environmental Justice Atlas (EJAtlas) is the world's largest database documenting nearly 4,000 environmental justice (EJ) conflicts globally, as of November 2023. The project was initiated to highlight struggles related to environmentally unjust activities and policies, while also exploring the role of social movements in promoting sustainability and justice. Built through trans-sectoral collaborations, the dynamic, bottom-up database continues to grow, featuring interactive maps that visually represent conflicts by country, commodity, and other criteria. The EJAtlas fosters alliances across social movements, supports scholar activism, and has a notable impact in education and policy-making. It has empowered grassroots resistance movements, strengthened global EJ networks, and contributed to political ecology scholarship by offering data-driven insights into socio-environmental conflicts. Through its decade-long history, the EJAtlas has influenced environmental advocacy, education, and governance, offering critical materials for scholar activists to further campaigns, activism, and policy interventions.
