Abstract

What is the future of the University? Twenty insights into the University in Catalonia [JOSEP GALLIFA i FRANCESC PEDRÓ] The university, as one of the fundamental institutions in advanced societies, is in the throes of change. The transformation undergone by our society over the last twenty years, often accelerated, although not always, has prompted the authors, both of them university heads of department and co-authors of the book What is the future of the University? Twenty insights into the University in Catalonia, to reflect upon the future of the university in our country. The departure point for this analysis are the mid-eighties, which saw the transfer of powers in university affairs. Over these years, demographic trends were reversed, with a fall in the population, accompanied by a proliferation and decentralisation of universities all over the place. It is true that the challenges, problems and opportunities are not the same now as they were twenty years ago. The article is mainly based on the diagnosis made by the Ministers for Universities or those holding similar posts, who were responsible for the university system in Catalonia between 1985 and 2001, and all the rectors of Catalan universities, public and private alike.
