Qohélet / Lector: Alegría en tiempos de vaciedad

Translated title of the contribution: Qohelet / Reader: Joy in an epoch of emptiness

Research output: Bookpeer-review

Abstract

Ecclesiastes, one of the most overwhelming books of the Old Testament due to its relentless argumentation, contains a paradoxical description of the current existence. Qoheleth, its author, gives a thorough account of it without giving up. Faced with the repeated suicidal temptations attributed to our civilization, reading and its corollary of glossing appreciate the creation of any work as a restraining force against any omen of disaster.

This book by Armando Pego proposes a journey through the readings of Ecclesiastes, from literary ones like those of José Jiménez Lozano and T. S. Eliot to the exegetical ones of S. John H. Newman and S. Jerome, to return to its current meaning with a review of the work of the Greek poet Theognis.

It is actually Qoheleth who reads our liquid modernity, and not the other way around. Without falling into despair, he reveals our condition to us with surprising joy. We could consider him a witness to our time, because we should be the ones who continue to bear witness to the radical nature of his message.
