Abstract
A preliminary approach to George Steiner's methodology of reading philosophy is attempted through the figures of Aristotle and Thomas of Aquinas. Aquinas is used as the counterpoint of the Greek philosopher in a double way. On the one hand, the aesthetic force of his theology is raised under the influence of Gilson and Maritain, among others; on the other hand, the James Joyces's epiphany is referred to a connection between the Doctor Angelico and Dante Alighieri. The epistemological reach of thomistic imitation and the conditions of the act of the poetical creation, make the concepts in Steiner difficult to be defined accurately. The steinerian «realism», based on the wager on the transcendence of meaning, must be rethought aesthetically, as attuned to a postmodernist epoch of the epilogue.
