Abstract

From ancient times, play has been considered by illustrious thinkers as an important educational instrument. No one is ignorant to the fact that play becomes a source and instrument of learning. The poet Horace expressed this perfectly in his maxim “to delight and to instruct”.
However, from the 18th century to the present day, through the development of the education sciences, play in educational terms has obtained greater prestige and social recognition, to the point that it is applied systematically as an educational resource.
First of all, there is a brief summary of education in the 19th within a European, Spanish but predominantly Catalan perspective. Then the article goes on to reveal how physical education is implemented in the education system and how it has developed in schools. Moreover, the article analyses the use of play as one of the essential elements of physic.
