Organizational Harmony: Integrating affect in paradox theory

Research output: Conference paperContributionpeer-review

Abstract

This paper makes a novel contribution to organizational research by developing the concept of organizational harmony Building on paradox theory, and incorporating elements from different philosophical traditions, musical theory, and semantics, we define organizational harmony as the organizational phenomenon of integrating heterogeneity, while preserving diversity, fostering a positive affective climate. By emphasizing positive affect as an intrinsic goal, we complement existing approaches in paradox theory, focused predominantly on cognitive integration and structural mechanisms, that view emotions as merely instrumental in resolving contradictions. By defining and clarifying the key elements of this construct, we establish a comprehensive foundation for future research and offer a more nuanced perspective on navigating organizational tensions.
