Abstract
Ecuadorian legislation promotes and encourages the process of reintegration of persons deprived of liberty. However, the reality in social reintegration centers is different. The decrease in the quality of life and a retributive intervention do not allow an adequate response to the legislative framework. This article gathers the voice of inmates and professionals to analyze the reality of the penitentiary system, identifying strengths and aspects to be improved in the purpose of the system itself, as well as actions to motivate and guide change. It concludes with a series of proposals that should allow improving the penal execution and favoring social reinsertion processes
