Abstract

This article analyses the simultaneous creation of the Spanish Patriotic League (LPE) and the National Monarchist Union (UMN) in Barcelona between the end of 1918 and the beginning of 1919 and their links. The LPE was a non-partisan Spanish nationalist group and the UMN was a party of aristocratic supporters of Alfonso XIII. Both organisations embodied the response of the bellicose radical Spanish nationalism or «Spanishism» to the campaign demanding autonomy for Catalonia. In this framework, the UMN wanted to control the LPE in order to lead Spanish nationalism as a whole. Although this project failed, it marked the subsequent development of Spanish nationalism in Barcelona.
