Abstract

It is indeed interesting to analyze the final document of the Fifth General Conference of Bishops of Latin America and the Carib-bean, held in Aparecida, ten years ago, in 2007, especially considering that it was written by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, today Pope Francis. In a germinal way, we find in this document the pope Francis’ social, pastoral theology, more precisely the theology of his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (2013), actually his pontificate program, deployed in the following years in Laudato Si’ (2015) and Amoris Laetitia (2016). After the General Confer-ences of Rio de Janeiro 1955 –concerned by preserving Catholicism in West countries–, Medellín 1968 and Puebla 1979 –both shaken by Latin American dictatorships, revolutionary processes and Liberation Theology–, and Santo Domingo 1992 –Church’s openness to indigenous peoples–, Aparecida 2007 means the success of the Latin America Catholic Church unity and a commitment to a pastoral mission with an unwavering social dimension, following the method “See, Judge, Act” with a Christocentric theology, and stressing the necessity of formation.
