Research output: Book chapterChapter

Abstract

Several studies demonstrate that there is a relation
between Perceived Emotional Intelligence (PEI)
and symptoms of anxiety and depression in a nonclinical population sample (Extremera and Fernández-Berrocal, 2006; Latorre and Montañés,
2004; Salguero and Iruarrizaga, 2006; Salovey
Stroud, Woolery and Epel, 2002) and in patients
with psychopathology (Lizeretti, Farriols, Castell,
Pascual and Palma, 2007; Lizeretti, Oberst,
Chamarro and Farriols, 2006).The main objective
of this research has been to ascertain the relationship of PEI factors with some of the clinical symptoms of patients with a variety of psychopathologies. 176 patients from Mataro’s Mental Health
Center (Sanitary Consortium of Maresme) with
generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, disthymia, cocaine addiction and psychotic disorder
were assessed by TMMS-24 and SCL-90-R instruments. Regression analysis for clinical variables on
the factors attention, clarity and repair, as well as the
intercorrelations between PEI variables and Anxiety, Depression and Global Index of Severity (GSI)
were carried out. Results show significant correlations among PEI and the presence and acuteness of
the symptoms in patients with psychopathology.
PEI appears as a mediating factor in the presence of
these symptoms in those patients.
