Abstract
The discovery of the theory of mirror neurons as the neurological substrate ofimitative behavior, empathy and ego awareness, and the deficit of theseaspects in autistic individuals, gives new meaning to imitation in psychotherapy. The integration of non-verbal and verbal imitation in the design of apsychoanalytic treatment consisting of 20 sessions for 4-year old childrenwith severe autism is presented. Different moments of treatment are shownthrough the use of clinical vignettes, and reflections made regarding the useof techniques adequate to each individual patient depending on his or herpsychopathology and development.
