Abstract
Mediterranean Europe condenses all political and social tensions caused by the crisis. Austerity policies represent a project to reorganize the current social model and suppose in practice a regressive transformation of the political regime and the implosion of democratic and institutional mechanisms. Social-democracy lacks a project of its own different from the right-wing forces and mainstream unionism is still attached to a model of social partnership with no outcome, in a context where social resistances are not yet strong enough to obtain victories, although they have contributed to delegitimize economic and political power
