Abstract
This article examines the difference between boys and girls in the selection of their favourite media celebrity or icon. According to the attraction paradigm and gender identification in psychology, it is hypothesized that children will select same-sex icons and identify more with younger ones. In addition, boys will identify more with athletes and girls with icons in the showbiz. Surveys in Spain with 492 8-12 year-old children show that boys and girls differ in their preferences regarding icon gender and activity (sports or showbiz), and that girls identify more with male icons in the showbiz. Implications of the findings are discussed.
