Abstract
In 1979, FGC was the first public company created by the Generalitat (the autonomous government) of Catalonia, restored shortly after the death of Franco (1975). It inherited different railway infrastructures in a highly precarious state. Investments made in subsequent years have led to the building of a high-quality, much-used, modern transport system, in which 'design for all' has been a basic feature. This case is a good tool for understanding the strategic planning that lies behind the 'design for all' or 'universal design' concept, and for analysing what good design management consists of.
