Abstract

Aims: The aim of this study is to describe and analyze the parenting skills of fathers andmothers attending a prevention program on drug use and other risk behaviours, to fi nd outwhether there are diff erences between mothers and fathers in relation to the parental roleand fi nally, to determine whether there are diff erences between the parental role and thechildren's level of education. Method: The sample consisted of 89 participants (22 fathersand 67 mothers). The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire of 54 Likert scaleitems divided into three scales to measure behaviours, attitudes and resources that parentsmay require to prevent risk behaviours. Results: The results show that fathers and mothersact in such a way as to promote prevention of risk behaviours, hold beliefs that associate riskbehaviours with feelings of distress and communication diffi culties in the family and displaythe need for tools to increase their parenting skills. There are signifi cant diff erences betweenmothers and fathers when it comes to exercising their parental skills. Finally, a signifi cantinteraction has been found between the parental role and the children's level of education. These fi ndings undoubtedly have educational and training implications on the developmentof prevention and intervention programs that focus on parental educational qualifi cations.
