Abstract
Many psychological skills meet and intertwine in play, which are very important for the development of children and youngsters. The aim of this article is to analyse the psychological substratum of playful behaviour in its genesis and later evolution.Special attention was given to the emergence of the semiotic function, to cognitive processes involved, and to the decisive role of communication. Finally, there is a reflection on one of the most genuine manifestations of human behaviour, recursiveness, which is achieved through language and play; it uses them and at the same time pro-motes their development.
