Abstract
This paper presents two studies. The first one analyzes the effects of cosmetic surgery on body image by means of a pre-post design in which the variable 'body image' was assessed by means of the Spanish version of the MBSRQ. It demonstrates that, after surgery, (a) there is an increase in the positive subjective valuation of body image; (b) patients are more conscious of the relevant aspects concerning their physical aspect; (c) patients concentrate more in the maintenance of their physical form, (d) patients feel more physically attractive and that (e) the factor Care of Physical Aspect is not affected by the intervention. With reference to the results of Study 2, the interventions and treatments contributed to improve their self-esteem in the dimension of body image. The paper finishes with a reflection grounded on the social construction of the self and of body image.
