    Abstract

Smartphone are gaining interest due to its multifunctional capabilities. In order to facilitate the integration of an antenna system, a compact radiating system comprising non-resonant cubic elements is proposed to provide multiband performance at GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, and UMTS. The radiating system integrated in a smartphone platform of 130 mm × 65 mm features a small volume of two metallic cubes of only 5 mm × 5 mm × 5 mm which are in close proximity to provide a compact configuration. Simulation and numerical results are in good agreement showing a multiband radiating system of only 250mm3 able to provide pentaband operation.
