Abstract
What are the motivations, strategies and toolkits of professionals in cultural industries who deviate from or reframe taken-for-granted norms, and under what conditions do their efforts fail or flourish? The paper brings together insights from institutional theory and sociology of culture to discuss aspects of motivation, opportunity sets, as well as strategies and toolkits for norm violation. It adds to an understudied, yet essential aspect of institution building and change, that of disrupting and tearing down institutions.
