Abstract

8-Cyano-3,4-dihydro-1,6-naphthyridin-2(1 H)-ones were obtained by nucleophilic substitution of the methoxyl group of 5-cyano-3,4-dihydro-6-methoxy-2(1H)-pyridones (5a-d) by malononitrile or cyanoacetamide followed by cyclization in acidic or basic medium.
