Personal profile

Research interests

Dr. Fornells is a Full Professor, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Data Analytics, and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at IQS School of Management, Ramon Llull University. Since 2003, his academic and professional career has been closely linked to research, teaching, and academic management at various universities, where he has held several leadership positions in academic planning, faculty management, research group coordination, and quality assurance.

Research lines
His research interests focus on data science, decision support systems based on artificial intelligence, and the application of disruptive technologies to emerging societal challenges, where data literacy, digital transformation, sustainability, and innovation play a crucial role. Currently, his work is aimed at generating positive impacts on the quality of life of cancer patients during treatment, through technological solutions based on data analytics and artificial intelligence. He has authored numerous publications in high-impact journals, mainly in the fields of artificial intelligence, education, and tourism. He has participated in European projects, national research networks, and contracts with public entities, always with a focus on pattern identification and data-driven decision-making. His work stands out for its interdisciplinary approach, with applications in both general contexts and specific domains such as cancer (breast, melanoma, leukemia), student skill development, and the promotion of innovation and sustainability in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Contribution to society
His research has had an impact in various areas, most notably in improving people’s quality of life and well-being, and in fostering the development of key competencies among university students. He has actively worked to bridge the gap between technology and the tourism sector, participating in the creation of the Tourism Tech cluster promoted by ACCIÓ (Government of Catalonia).

Training of researchers, team leadership, and scientific evaluation
He has supervised five doctoral theses—three in artificial intelligence and two in student competency development—and is currently supervising three more: two focused on improving the quality of life of leukemia patients, and one developed within an industrial PhD programme on the detection of defects in food packaging using computer vision. As a team leader, he led the creation of the Tourism Department and its research group at HTSI-URL (2018), and oversaw the transformation of the Department of Quantitative Methods into the current Department of Mathematics and Data Analytics at IQS. He also promoted the ADAMIQS research group (Applied Data Analytics and Maths IQS), recognized as an emerging research group by the Government of Catalonia (SGR 2022). He has served as reviewer for scientific journals and as a member of doctoral committees and academic accreditation panels.

Teaching and institutional service
He has an extensive teaching record in undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes, covering subjects in data science, artificial intelligence, and internet technologies, in both engineering faculties and business schools. He has also participated in various university governance bodies at Ramon Llull University, including the Research Committee, the Teaching Innovation Committee, the Quality Assurance Committee, and the University Governing Council.
