The Madeira River Complex: Socio-environmental impact in Bolivian Amazonia and social resistance

The Madeira River Complex is a project that is included in the neoliberal development and regional integration model and is a project that deals with transport infrastructure and energy that is part of the so-called "Washington Consensus". The IIRSA is considering this Madeira River Complex to be a top priority project as it will provide energy to Brazilian urban areas while enabling the massive quantities of goods to a lesser extent. The Amazon region in Bolivia and western Brazil will have dire environmental, social, and economic consequences from this Madeira River Complex. However, the work that will be required to build such project will have a negative effect to the people as it might lead to floods, a decrease on the fish stocks as well as on the ecological balance that sustains the culturally, environmentally, and economically important chestnut forests.
