The article analyses how the Court accepted the legitimacy of national language protection objectives, while subjecting such requirements to a strict proportionality review. It reflects on the judgment’s treatment of educational language rules, the scope of internal market law in the education sector, and the continuing uncertainties surrounding when language requirements are permissible and how much flexibility Member States must allow.
