Resum
This paper examines the role of political ideology in shaping cultural participation across five European countries. While previous studies have emphasized demographics and identity-related motivations, we argue that ideology also structures museum attendance and engagement with socio-political art. Drawing on a cross-national online survey (N = 4000) in Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Italy, we address whether ideology predicts museum attendance, influences interest in socio-political art, shapes the likelihood of art fostering reflection, and intersects with demographics to produce distinct audience clusters. Using survey-weighted logistic regressions and clustering analysis, findings show that ideology modestly predicts attendance and reflection but more strongly conditions interest in socio-political art, especially among left-leaning publics. These dynamics have implications for cultural policy and institutional practice: recognizing ideology as a factor in participation can help museums design more inclusive programming and audience development strategies.
