Resum

Mixtures of chloroform and alkalis produce alkaline chlorides, formiates, and CO through a strongly exothermic set of reactions. The main problems of the synthetic procedure are a very high exothermic behavior shown by the chemical reactions, the formation of CO, and the two phase character of the reaction showing a strong dependence on stirring. Experiments in runway and non-runaway conditions have been carried out and the model that describes this complex reaction has been adjusted. When the temperature increases, the reaction rate also increases following two different tendencies. The stirring rate produces the same effects in the reaction rate. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Glasgow, Scotland 7/10-14/2005).
