Resum
More and more old people take care regularly their grandchildren, as a way to help adult children
to balance work and family. The aim of this study was to assess what difficult grandchildren’s behaviours were perceived by grandparents, what source of help grandparent use as caregivers and the
degree of satisfaction they get as caregivers. 312 people participated on this study (240 grandmothers
and 72 grandfathers that took care regularly to at least one grandchild up to 12 years old). Participants
filled a questionnaire regarding different areas of this role of caregiver and their consequences. For this
presentation three variables were chosen: 9 difficult grandchildren’s behaviours, 6 sources of help, and
grandparent’s satisfaction. Results shown that 80% of participants perceived their grandchildren as naughty, disobedient and moved. The main assistance is received by their partner, lesser from their children and nearly nothing from public institutions. Finally, satisfaction with caring grandchildren is very
high, both emotional and cognitive satisfaction. Results are discussed in the light of successful aging
theory and generativity of the elderly
