N2 - A small non-resonant antenna element (86.4mm3) is proposed for multiband operation in a smartphone for operating 824MHz-960MHz, 1710MHz-2170MHz, and 2500MHz-2690MHz. The small non-resonant antenna element is compared regarding a free-space scenario in terms of reflection coefficient, total efficiency, total radiated power, and total isotropic sensitivity with the original antenna of the smartphone having a volume of 707mm3. In addition, field test measurements are carried out to compare the performance of both antenna solutions in real situations, particularly when a user holds the smartphone in talking position. Results show that the non-resonant antenna element performs similar at the low-bands (824MHz-960MHz) whereas is better at the high bands (freq>1710MHz) with the advantage of a volume 8 times less than the original antenna.
