Resum

As Open Source Software (OSS) industry is moving quickly to a strong commercial orientation, the question of business models is becoming relevant. While investigating which business model works best for the majority of Spanish OSS companies, two relevant questions emerged: i) are these models specific of the OSS industry, or one can find them in the whole software industry?, and b) are these models a practical tool for OSS entrepreneurs? First results show that Spanish OSS companies usually start as services providers only, but after a while move to a hybrid of software developers (either open source or propietary) and service provider; and that business models don't guide OSS entrepreneurs' practice.
