his paper presents a multiple case study that identiies factors to support success
in schools amongst Secondary School students living in poverty and social vulnerability in
ive Spanish cities. he research aims to understand these factors in context, seeking to avoid
a determinist and stigmatized approach that oten links low socio-economic and cultural levels
with school failure. he sample consists of 30 cases of students who have completed compulsory
education. he method consisted of collecting and analyzing information from diferent sources:
the students’ academic results were triangulated with semi-structured interviews with students,
their families, their teachers and community stakeholders. he indings point out that there exist elements on individual, scholar, family and community levels
promoting success for schools in these contexts. Socio-educational support from stakeholders,
neighborhood social capital, longstanding relationships and some personal characteristics are
key elements that could ofset socio-economic and cultural handicaps among students. hese
early indings open new perspectives to improve educational equity and inclusion policies.
