Description
Motivation:
While strategic management literature recognizes that many breakthrough innovations emerge from serendipitous discoveries rather than deliberate search, this phenomenon remains understudied empirically. This research addresses a critical gap by providing quantitative evidence for how organizational culture enables systematic capability development for serendipitous innovation, offering strategic alternatives for firms that cannot compete in traditional R&D arms races.
Goals:
This project aims to empirically test how cultural preparedness enables companies to achieve breakthrough innovations through alternative pathways beyond traditional R&D investment or acquisitions. The study will develop machine learning models to identify specific cultural dimensions (i.e, Psychological Safety, Openness to Uncertainty, Learning & Adaptive Capability, Network Orientation) that facilitate the transformation of unexpected encounters into valuable innovations across diverse industry sectors. All models will be made open source and available to the public.
Work Plan:
- Data Collection Phase (Months 1-3): Acquire comprehensive workforce and organizational data from PeopleDataLabs database covering S&P 1500 companies (2018-2024)
- Data Processing Phase (Months 4-6): Contract specialized data labeling experts via OpenTrain to code cultural indicators from earnings transcripts and employee reviews using fine-tuned transformer models
- Analysis Phase (Months 7-9): Apply computational text analysis to measure cultural preparedness dimensions (psychological safety, ambiguity tolerance, combinatorial learning, network permeability)
- Validation Phase (Months 10-12): Correlate cultural metrics with breakthrough innovation outputs and prepare publication
Expected Outcomes:
- Empirical validation of organizational serendipity as a measurable strategic capability across firm sizes
- Identification of cultural configurations that enable breakthrough innovation in resource-constrained environments
- Publication in top-tier management journals
- Framework for practitioners to assess and develop cultural preparedness for innovation
Budget Justification:
Database access (€10,000): Essential workforce insights data covering employee diversity, mobility patterns, skill composition, and turnover metrics across 1,500 firms to measure network permeability and combinatorial learning orientation
Data labeling expertise (€5,000): Required for accurate coding of cultural indicators from unstructured text using specialized AI/ML platforms, ensuring reliable measurement of espoused vs. experienced culture alignment
