Description
"The main goal of this proposal is to take advantage of the latest advancements in the field of cloud computing and microservices to research the most appropriate way to containerize and deploy an existing bioinformatics workflow for metabolomics into a cloud service pipeline. Therefore, this research aims to derive into an open tool inspired by the cloud computing paradigm able to run bioinformatics workflows in a scalable way.
We envision this tool to become a key academic asset in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, allowing students in both engineering and biomedical areas to interact with real tools and data, and to get exposed to a learning experience at the intersection between engineering and biomedicine. In particular, students can be involved when developing their final thesis projects. Also, the procedures developed, and the results obtained, can be used in different courses such as Programming Technology and Methodology, Technological Trends subject (where there is a seminar on this topic already), Projects in Distributed Architectures from the undergraduate programs or in courses from master studies, such as the Master in Data Science, Master in Big Data, or Master in Telecommunications Engineering, whose coordinators have already expressed a positive interest in this regard.
To sum up, we will aim the following objectives:
- To combine the knowhow in bioinformatics of the GTM with the knowhow in distributed systems of the GRITS in order to conceive a cloud inspired tool based in microservices able to run bioinformatics workflows meeting the FAIR data principles.
- To design, develop, and deploy a bioinformatics workflow into the proposed tool.
- To share the research experiences and the conceived infrastructure along this project to our Undergraduate and Master’s students (Computer Engineering Degree, Master in Data Science, Master in Big Data, or Master in Telecommunications Engineering)."
